Fix it in your stack

Tested fixes for CWE-915 in Express, Flask, Spring Boot, ASP.NET Core, Next.js, FastAPI, Django, net/http, Rails and Laravel: the vulnerable code, the fix, a plausible fix that still fails, and the regression tests.

Definition

MITRE’s description of CWE-915: The product receives input from an upstream component that specifies multiple attributes, properties, or fields that are to be initialized or updated in an object, but it does not properly control which attributes can be modified.

Common consequences MITRE lists

  • Integrity: Modify Application Data
  • Integrity: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
  • Other, Integrity: Varies by Context; Alter Execution Logic

Why it matters

One extra JSON field can grant administrator rights or change a price; checking that a user may edit the object does not cover which fields they may edit.

How to prevent it

  • Bind request data to dedicated input types that contain only the fields a caller may set.
  • Allowlist writable fields per role and action; never rely on a blocklist.
  • Test that unexpected and privileged fields are rejected or ignored.
