MITRE’s description of CWE-77: The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component.

Common consequences MITRE lists

  • Integrity, Confidentiality, Availability: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

Why it matters

When input is assembled into a command for another program, special characters or extra arguments change what that program does, from reading files to running code.

How to prevent it

  • Pass arguments as a list to an API that does not invoke a shell, and keep the command itself fixed.
  • Allowlist values and end options with -- so that input cannot be read as a flag.
  • Prefer a library call to invoking another program.
