MITRE’s description of CWE-548: The product inappropriately exposes a directory listing with an index of all the resources located inside of the directory.
Common consequences MITRE lists
- Confidentiality: Read Files or Directories
A listing reveals every file name, including backups, exports and uploads that were never linked, and guides an attacker to them.
- Turn directory listing off in every web server and static-file middleware (
autoindex off,Options -Indexes). - Serve only allowlisted file extensions from a clean build directory.
- Request each static folder after deployment and confirm no listing is returned.
